In 2009 I graduated from a top US college with a bachelor’s degree in biology, and couldn’t get a job in my field.

I had wanted to get fit and gained some muscle, but had a hard time sticking with my gym routine to get consistent results.

One night, I went down for dinner with my parents.

I was moping around like a little baby again, acting grumpy, feeling sorry for myself, really unhappy with how things were going.

They both looked at me concerned, then said:

"What's up?'

I tried really hard not to cry when I said, "I literally hate everything about my life - every minute of it." 

They had never really seen me at the bottom of the barrel like this, so they said:

"We're really worried about you - why don't you take your savings and just go on a trip somewhere? Even though you never wanted to use that money... go do something fun..."

They were legitimately worried I might do something stupid.

Really stupid.

Thankfully, the next day, I decided to reflect on my life.

That was the day I discovered something incredibly powerful.

In my depressed state, I started doing an exercise that would change my life

I started spending a few hours each day in coffee shops, because I hated going home and getting nagged by my parents.

And it was around this time that my love of personal development started, where I started reading personal development books every day because I wanted to change everything about my life.

One of the hundreds of books I read was Think and Grow Rich.

Another was an audiotape by Jim Rohn.

But one interview I liked more than the others: The interview with Andrew Carnegie from 1908, where he said:

Write down one’s definite major purpose, and read it aloud twice a day.

And later I found Earl Nightingale, who said:

“For whatever problem you’re struggling with in your life, take out one page in a journal, and write out 10 ideas for how to overcome it.”

I never would’ve guessed that such a simple exercise would change my life over the next five years.

I first used this journaling exercise to improve my physical fitness - and I got in the fittest shape I had ever been.

My body fat levels were low enough that I had a year-round six pack.
